I have had symptons close to what you describe and corrected it by replacing the "Aux Air slide" and the associated 3/4" vac lines. This is the unit that is mounted between the #1 and #2 injectors. (One electrical connection and two 3/4" vac lines.) I have found these bad on more than one car and corrected Start-up and early idle problems. I think they are about $50 now. The wear out mechanism --> the slide rubs metal against composite every time you transition from cold to hot and eventually allows more air through than designed at all temps. Early sign may be over rich during start-up. If you are careful, you can open and clean your warm-up reg. Don't remove the lines at the reg; unscrew them at the far end. the reg can be clogged easily but have never seen it effect operation like you describe. Yeah, I have a 1980 320i, and I've been told my warm-up regulator also needs to be replaced. I don't know if it's that, or the cold-start valve. Both parts are available at expressautoparts.com for $81 and $71 respectively. Since I am on a budget, I am not layig out any cash until I know what my problem is. If anyone could help clear up what these two parts do, it would be greatly appreciated here.
