How often should you replace the 02 Sensor, I believe the last time the one in my car was changed in '96

This is a real puzzle. I had one O2 sensor that was good for 5 years, maybe 40,000 miles. This is for my 320i USA model, always used with Chevron or Exxon premium 93 octane gasoline. But then a new O2 sensor that I installed in 1999 has already failed, only 7,000 miles! I checked it with a voltmeter, and it was out of specification. So I have just installed another one. Who knows why the old one failed - some kind of sludge in the exhaust? Maybe I got some anti-sieze compound on the tip.
