I had an '80 320i for a long time. The car would idle very rough (surging), so I put a new 02 sensor in and the surging was still there, also the car hesitated when ecellerating. I disconnected the 02 sensor and the idle was as smooth as glass, also no hesitation at all. It seemed as though the car had more power also (maybe just my imagination). A mechanic told me that since I disconnected the 02 sensor I was running a straigh mixture.
How often should you replace the 02 Sensor, I believe the last time the one in my car was changed in '96
This is a real puzzle. I had one O2 sensor that was good for 5 years, maybe 40,000 miles. This is for my 320i USA model, always used with Chevron or Exxon premium 93 octane gasoline. But then a new O2 sensor that I installed in 1999 has already failed, only 7,000 miles! I checked it with a voltmeter, and it was out of specification. So I have just installed another one. Who knows why the old one failed - some kind of sludge in the exhaust? Maybe I got some anti-sieze compound on the tip.
