Dean- I have the same problem with my '78 E21 320i...It takes a good 15 turns of the ignition key before it fires. All other power is strong (ie- battery). The starter could be the problem, but I am not sure. Seems electrical and finding a loose ground somewhere is probably the answer???

Similarly curious,

Tom

Last week my 82 320i stopped dead due to an alternator ground wire working loose. When I turned the car over only a relay click, no engine turn occurred. Yesterday, I went to start the vehicle and the same click occurred. No engine response. Although everything seemed to have solid power, I thought it may be the battery, so I jumped the car. This got it started.

I then drove 2.5 hours and shut the car down for an hour. When I went to start it that short time later, I again received no engine response. I then let the car sit overnight, fortunately, it fired up without a problem this morning.

The car has 220k miles on it...alternator is new, starter probably 70k miles old...any thoughts as to why this may happen?
