316 '82 e21 suddenly cold start problem (archive)

I have a 316 (1800cc with zenith carb) it always started ok in the mornings, now its like the choke doens't work, i also heard something about a 17 degree microswitch, can someone help me out? engines runs great when warm somethimes (not always) i hear a short rattling noise at cold start could this be the distribution tense spring? or chain?
