I pull dip stick trying to find a vacuum leak (archive)

And low and behold the surging stops and the idle smooths out on this 80 320i. I thought vacuum leaks were responsible for surging, why does that make it run smoother. I would like to have the dip stick fully inserted to keep the dirt out so does any one have any ideas on what I can do to get it right.
I pulled off the oil cap and it keeps running fine, I thought that was supposed to make them die. Any ideas on what I can do?
