If I am reading your message correctly, you took the car in to the shop with it running (albeit roughly), but it is no longer running at all.

Demand the car be returned to at least running as well as it was when you dropped it off. If he has done any work to the car that you have not authorized, you are not liable for costs incurred. You probably should try to find an attorney to just write a letter to him on your behalf regarding the situation. Hopefully a thinly-veiled threat of legal action will help you get your car back.
