I know I have posted this before, but i'll just reiterate for the sake of emphasis:

I spent alot of unnecessary dollars and more importantly, alot of weekends, trying to cure the shimmy @ 55-70 mph when I first bought my 323i.

In the end, after changing out shocks, entire lower control arm assembly, steering rack, and installing anti shimmy kit, it was indeed the tires. I made the careless assumption that new tires could not possibly be out of round. Well the machines identified two tires out of round, and two of the wheels slightly bent. This is after I even had the tires checked two-three times by different tire dealers around town to be sure that it was first and foremost not related to the tires and making a bad assumption that the car with new YOKO AVS intermediates could not be the main problem.

My suggestion is to be absolutely certain that it is not with the tires. Short of finding someone with a set of tires who will let you try it out, the other real option is to locate a tire dealer who is using the latest Hunter tire machine (i think it's the 9700 model, not 100% sure). It has a rolling bar that contacts the outer circumference of the tire to be able to measure out of roundness, side to side wobble, and lastly, uneven balance.

If you happen to be in the Austin/Central Texas area, I would be happy to let you try out my wheels & tires to debug.

I researched the Archives and the neat e21 Web Site recommended, and none of the postings were very hopeful. Seemed like most fixes are hit-and-miss or just plain luck.

1981 323i Federalized Euro (with ugly bumpers thanks to Uncle Sam), 69K original miles and shimmying at 40-50 mph.

Tried new tires, control arm bushings. Everything else is TIGHT, including factory hydrailic shimmy damper attached to the right side of the steering rack.

Anyone tried urethane rack/swaybar bushings? Do they work?

Bob
