NOt being too familiar w/ 320/6, I did experienced a similar problem w/ my 323i.

Turns out the plastic plug going into the distributor was not making positive contact to
maintain electrical connection to fire the spark plugs. WHat's also interesting is that the tachometer is also run off of the distributor. So it could be a guesstimation, but for me, it was just a matter of wiggling the connector, and contact was made once again.

When I got home, I removed the distributor cap, and noticed that part of the plastic tang on the interior end of the male plug broke. So to keep the two plugs connected, male to female, I zip tied the wires of the male connector tightly against the female connector on the distributor housing so that it will not be able to back out of the connection.

It's been ticking like a timex watch ever since.

Has anyone ever had a problem with your E21 just all
of a sudden cutting out? My mechanic says it's the
engine loom. He does seem to have a point though
b/cause when it dies the tach jumps to zero. Any
input/thoughts greatly appreciated. Also if any
of you stateside boys -really -really need a part
and can't find it anywhere else for your E21 I can
get it for you. - Plenty of junked E21's here in the
UK.
