The valves in a BMW are not adjusted like a hydraulic lifter American V8. If you attempt to do it that way, you will damage the engine in an expensive way. You will need a service manual and a feeler gauge to do it properly. The valves in an SOHC engine with rocker arms, like your BMW (as opposed to bucket followers) always make some noise; it is normal.
