Ed,

I recently did replace the sun roof crank/gearbox, the cable rails and cables on my '83 320is. The procedure that I used to synchronize the gearbox is not the correct way. If anyone knows the correct method, please let us know.

When I was installing the cables I noticed that the gearbox seemed to have the stops built in the gearing so that when you re-install the cables you need to have the gear box at the right position. I ended up doing this by trial an error and I suspect the matter in my case may have been complicated by stretched and slightly different length cables. Anyway, I turned the gearbox to close the roof until resistance was felt, installed the cables and cranked them in. After installing the roof, I ended up being about 2 full turns out of sync when the crank should have resistance at fully closed and when it is fully open. I took the cables out, turned the gear box to close the roof, turned 2 turns past the resistance point, then re-installed the cables and reassembled the roof. I actually did this about 10 times until it was just right, but you get the idea.

Recently diassembled the sunroof crank mechanism on my 320i to fix a inop sunroof. Fixed the problem however now it appears I have the gears in wrong (Hard to crank at certain points). Is this possible? Is there a right or wrong way to reassemble the the various gears located in the crank assembly?? Thanks in advance
Ed
