I have heard that running the highest level octane is better for the engine. I switched to premuim octane about a year ago from the regular old 87 and I have noticed a large difference in valve pinging.

As gasoline prices continue to drift upward here in northern California, I was thinking of using regular gasoline rather than premium. That thought led to two questions:

1) Does anyone have a factory manual for a 1981 320i and if so, could you give me the actual factory recomendation for the gasoline octane?

2) Does anyone have any opinions/comments on the idea of using regular gasoline rather than premium?

My thanks in advance
