My manual says that 87 octane is fine but I would not dream of putting anything less than super in it. I went through three tanks of regular unleaded as an experiment once and the car was knocking bad at the conclusion of my experiment. I too was looking for a cheaper solution but what I realized that it is cheaper to put in super than pay for a new engine. That's my 2 cents.

81 320i



As gasoline prices continue to drift upward here in northern California, I was thinking of using regular gasoline rather than premium. That thought led to two questions:

1) Does anyone have a factory manual for a 1981 320i and if so, could you give me the actual factory recomendation for the gasoline octane?

2) Does anyone have any opinions/comments on the idea of using regular gasoline rather than premium?
