Yes room in the fender well isn't much of an issue provided you stay reasonable with width and maintain a stock rolling diameter.

Also, 14/15 inches the issue is steering arm clearance to rim so with 17 it becomes less of an issue because the rim is large enough to clear. Not sure about 16 (Tire rack has some 16" borbet.)

Personally, Ivote for Alpina's of an old set of bbs RA.

does anyone know if 15" wheels will fit on an '80 320i


Sorry about that other post fellah's, I was assuming he'd already have correct lug pattern specs and was more curious about dimensions inside the wheel well.
brands with 15's that may bolt on (no parts changes etc...maybe spacers though) are Alpina, BBS, Epsilon, some Enkei and a few others.
