Distributor Pickup Coil Replacement (archive)

Before I spend hours and hours trying it myself, does anyone know if it is very difficult or time consuming to replace a pickup coil inside the distributor? ('82 320i) I'm almost certain this is the problem (car shuts off after a few minutes of running; starts again when cold).

Does the distributor have to come out, or can I do it with the distributor in?

I'm pretty good with mechanical repairs, but am really strapped for time right now. Any guestimates of time required to repair?

Thanks very much.
