After taking off the water pump and inspecting it, I am truly amazed that it wasn't making a racket when on the car. The thing was *totally* shot. So, after finding the correct one (for a pre 88 325e) and a new pulley to replace the one from the 323 water pump (I don't have a motor driven fan) since the old pulley didn't fit the more modern one, I am on my way to bolt it all on.
