there is a light that is always on in my dash. It is some sort of warning light in the upper left corner of the dash, above the brake light. I would like to know why it is on and what it means, and maybe how to get it off.

brake wear sensor light, I'd bet $50 on it...totally typical on E21, you're not necessarilly doing any harm driving with it on. To find out, examine your brakes.

I've also heard weird unsubstantiated stories about the sensor light having something to do with loose wiring at the parking brake.
