I am told the fuel gauge sending unit mounts on the top of one tank, just under the rear passenger seat. This unit seals to the tank through an O-ring which are prone to deteriorate. I am told it is an easy repair, and ordered the O-ring through Bavarian Autosports. I have not replaced it yet, but intend to soon.
Don't forget to disconnect your battery first, before attempting this repair. Sparks+gas don't mix.
When I fill the tank on my 1983 320i, I can smell gas for several days - until it is down to about 3/4 tank. I had both gas tanks replaced a year ago, because they were leaking at the seams. I think the smell started shortly after that repair. I assume it's something with the vapor return canister in the trunk. However, I can't see any visible signs of cracks in the tank or connecting hoses. I have not looked under the car however. This only happens if I fill the car up. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the help.
