Swaybar bushing question (archive)

I've been trying to track down a vague handling issue with my E21 -

Shouldn't there be some sort of rubber or plastic between the metal washers on the front swaybar ends and the metal of the arm that the ends of the swaybar go into? I just had 'em replaced last year, but it certainly seems that the wheel would feel loose if it didn't have the swaybar end holding it securely in place front to back.
