I just bought my 320i for $1000 (210K miles) and have noticed that steering is really loose (can rotate the wheel almost 20 degrees from top dead center when driving straight before car starts turning). As I turn hard right to make the corner, once I pass almost 3/4 rotation of the steering wheel, it gets really hard to complete the turn.

It's a manual rack and pinion (non power assisted) steering system.

I'm replacing the steering rack this weekend hoping to remedy the problem. I've thought of checking the lower control arms and ball joints, also the strut pivot while changing the rack. What else should I look for?

Also, the clear coat is flaking off badly. Should I strip all the paint off and repaint, or just strip the clear coat and redo the clear coat? What kind of results can I expect from this?
