Torque settings for hub nuts (archive)

What are the torque settings for the front hub nuts on a 316 and a 323i e21?

The haynes manual (a fine piece of literature available here in the UK [sic]) only gives setttings for an e30 which is 280 Nm. I tried 240 Nm and now there are pieces of wheel bearings all over, and the car is dumped 500 yards down the road. I have a spare bearing, but its my last one and I'll get upset if I have to use public transport for another day...
