Smog pumps don't really pass enough air to make a significant difference on a car motor, but there was a time about 30 years ago when some guys showed up at Bonneville with a little Honda 125 cc motorcycle which had a Ford 429 air pump as a supercharger and they set a new record for their class -- they drove the pump off the cycle chain, so the boost increased dramatically as they got into higher and higher gears. Very simple and effective, if you're interested in tiny motorcycle motors; you might do a bibliographical search of old _Hot Rod_ magazines from about then.
