1982 BMW 320i- god-awful noise in transmission (archive)

Hey Guys-

THis just started today- i took the car out and noticed that there was a wierd noise like something like the throwout bearing in the clutch assembly would make.. whenever that noise presents itself, it usually stops after a few seconds.

This time it didnt- and the more I drive the car and the faster i go, the worse the noise sounds- in gear or in neutral. It sounds like a bunch of jet engines spooling up and various other noises that sound like electric motors that haven't been greased or oiled in a long time. The clutch works fine, and the car shifts no differently than before- just this god awful noise coming from the tranny that I cannot live with. Obviously, it cannot be "benign". I hope it's something simple like the Manual Tranny fluid...
