Field guide to BMWs? E21 vs E30? (archive)

Is there an online field guide to BMWs, preferably with pics? Specifically, how do you tell between an E21 and E30 from the exterior?

I just saw one of each at the autocross in Monterey, and the E21 had sharp vertical front corner turnlights and a simple line of lamps in the rear. The E30 had subdued front turnlights, and the white reverse lamp was embedded in a red brake light.

Is that sufficient to tell 'em apart?
