I've played around with the fuel pump quite a bit on my 79, replacing it, the pressure storage thingy, etc. as a whole from a junk part and getting lucky. I assume we're talking about the main fuel pump, and not the one in the tank. Anyhow, the fuel pump does make a fair amount of noise, but it is usually more of a whoosing sound than a grinding. The only thing I can think of, if the pump is new, is the bushings on the bracket could be worn out, causing some vibration. My pump did make a nasty grinding sound only one time, and I was out of gas. Hope this points you in the right direction, or at least provides some clues.
