I put new rear control arm bushings into my 528i under the car, without removing the control arms from the car. The only tools needed are threaded rod and a short piece of pipe, about as long as your bushing and big enough in diameter so the bushing will fall thru freely. You use the threaded rod to pull the bushing out of the control arm and into the pipe. Then use the threaded rod again to pull the new bushing into the control arm. Took me about eight hours.

As far as what kind of bushings to use, that's kind of subjective. After looking into a couple hard plastic bushings, I went back and got stock rubber bushings for my daily driver. That's easier to live with on the roads.
