If your car still has the original radiator, it might be time to replace it. As they age they become clogged and the seal at the top of the radiator has a tendency to weaken. It can lead to loss in pressure in your cooling system which can be difficult to track down. The only problem is the cost. You might want to try replacing the 80 degree thermostat with a 71 degree thermostat first. My car had always run hot and I was always told that 320i's always ran that way. But after replacing the radiator and the thermostat my car almost runs too cool. I was able to drive it in the Mojave desert during the summer with the air on, but without the auxiliary fan running.
I have a 1982 320i that is overheating. The engine temperature gauge will reach the maximum reading within a few minutes with the car idling. The thermostat has been replaced. The water pump is not leaking coolant. The cooling fan is belt driven and is functioning. The hoses from the engine to the radiator and to the thermostat housing are hot. The return hose from the radiator to the thermostat is cold. What are some test that can be performed to find out if the water pump is functioning? Could the radiator be clogged? The system has been flushed by someone else several times. The radiator has not been removed to be back flushed. The engine is indeed hot and I believe the sensor is reporting the correct temperature.
