If you imagine the regulator at the back of the alternator being at 12 o'clock, then mounting ears for the early alternator are below the 3/9 o'clock line. Mounting ears for the late model (>8/79) are above the 3/9 o'clock line relative to the regulator.

Hope this answers the alternator question, not sure of any starer differences.
