79 320i auto trans (archive)

What should the engine rpm's be at 65mph on my 79 320i with automatic transmission..I originally thought it was not shifting into the final drive, now I'm not so sure..let me explain..sorry to be over simplified but here goes..you put the car in drive..starts out fine then shifts smoothly to the next gear, build up a little speed and it shifts to the next gear...now that's it and there seems to be a need for another gear or something cause I'm doing 3000rpm at around 55-60mph...i feel like i'm in my old chevelle with 4:11 gears..this can't be right...other than the need for the next shift(?) the trans shifts smoothly with no slippage or anything..fluids good..I'm going to change the fluid and filter before heading over to the local bmw mechanic here who thinks i have noney or ware a red suit like Santa...any advise would be appreciated..sorry for the long post..thanks in advance..
