Mike,

The method that your friends gave you sounds like a method to use for your front hubs if you don't have a torque wrench (torque to 22-24 lb-ft while turning hub and then loosen and retighten finger tight,removing all bearing play).

The Haynes manual for the 6-cylinder E21 specifies 295 lb-ft/400 nm for the rear nut and makes no distinction between drum and disc brake equipped models. While I couldn't confirm this in my 323i owners manual, the figures for my tii are the same in my owners manual and the Haynes at 217 lb-ft.
