Find an '80-'82 320i in a junkyard and get the transmission, flywheel, driveshaft, all shift linkage, lever, etc., the complete pedal cluster, clutch master cylinder, hydraulic line, and speedometer cable. The '80-'82 320i had a stronger 5-speed than the '83 model. Installation is straightforward; replace the front and rear seals in the "new" transmission and the rear crank seal in the engine. Use a new clutch, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and clutch fork pivot, and be sure to connect the reverse light switch. These steps will insure a good conversion that will be trouble-free for a long time.
