Watch out for STRUT TOWERS, both front and aft. I helped a friend of mine with the purchase of a realitively pristine '81 320i, and the first thing I checked was strut towers. If there is rust holes around or on, then leave it alone, your struts will blow right through the hood or trunk, not very pleasent. because you are just thinking of a winter beater, any other rust is not important, ie, surface, fenders, doors. About the auto tranny, don't worry about the button thing, my '83 733i is pristine, and I can shift without depressing the button, though I always depress it. Also the interior shouldn't matter if just a beater. If I was you I'd pick this thing up.

hey there all. There's a salvage yard near me with an '81 320i ofr sale....it runs and drives....its problems appear to be cosmetic...asside from a dent in the roof.....rockers look sound and all visible metal is good...has turbine alloys. Upolstry is trashed w/ ok console...fair pain, little surface rust...guy wants $350 for it. What are some trouble spots I sould look for in this car....I have lots of experience with 2002's and would probably use this as a winter beater. Sound like a good deal? Oh, the automatic shift selector moves into the different selections without depressing the button.....is this a big deal/fix? Thanks for any info.
