The 305CID is Chevy's equivalent of the BMW eta motor. If memory serves me correctly, it is basically a small journal shortblock from a 283CID line, w/ a 307CID cast iron crank, two bolt maincaps. I saw this motor routinely spin rod bearings with any amount of camming put on it.

Chevy came out with the 305CID somewhere in the 1976-78, with hope of increasing the motor's gas mileage. It's like the stepchild of the family, neither very good at either improving gas mileage nor offering any sort of performance.
