Sounds like a grounding problem, I haven't seen a 320/6 tach but I imagine its the same as the 4 cyl as far as connection(3 wire). You may need a wiring diagram(cant help you there) and find the ground wire(s) from the tach. Use a sheetmetal screw and make a ground wire to the body.
Also check the ground strap from the engine to the chassis.
Good luck

Hi everyone!
This is what happens with the tachometer of my e21 (320/6)
When I bought the car (1 year ago) the tacho would not read
correctly. Let me explain better, it would work fine, but it did not start on the '0' rpm, it started in the middle where the digital clock is, so if I revved up, then the needle would get to 0, or to 2000 rpm, although the car would be revving high. Now, I replaced the whole dashboard, and when I installed it, it worked fine, no problems. But since 1 month ago, it went 1000 rpms down, I mean when it's in iddle around 800-1000rpm, the needle is just below 0 rpms, again the same thing than before....
ANY IDEAS ON WHAT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM???
Thanks all for your input, and sorry for my english,Alejandro.
