One my '81 320i there is a unit on the speedometer that counts mileage and this trips the O2 light. It is on the drivers side (follow the speedo cable and find a box) there is a button on it, you need to use a screwdriver or something to push the button and your hear a little whirr. This resets the unit and the light should go out. Mine tripped about every 30,000 miles.
