I have started the project of discussion myself with an 81 320i using a HO 327 and a BW T-5 from a 82-92 Z28. With this combination, the stick that pops out of the tail end of the trans ends up right in the center of the 320s shifter hole. The only way a small block fits the stock steering/ Front crossmember is to used an inverted- hump oilpan and from a Chevy II. Otherwise, you would have to completely rebuild the front steering/suspension and then you would defeat the purpose of owning a 320. You also need to eliminate the power brake booster or shove the entire master cyl/booster/foot pedals/clutch cyl/ Back 2 full inches into the cockpit. Not wanting to sacrifice power brakes, I chose the latter method, but would highly reconsider the former in a 2000-2500lb shitbox.
Unfortunately, the 325 horse 5 speed pocket rocket and all the custom adjustable motor mounts and information {like radiators that fit from a parts stores instead of $$$ custom jobs}will not be seeing the streets with my tags on it. I have the car {solid Ca modelw/ 13" honeycomb wheels. with all these cool ingredients and knowledge but no time or motivation to finish it. I would hate to see a bunch of excellent parts and a shitload of research and developement get hauled to the scrapeyard, but its taking up valuable space in my garage.I would rather trade someone for a 320i that runs and drives. To answer your initial question, I think that is a very worthwhile and workable project for someone who wants to see it done.

There's a lot of talk of this in the backgound. The fact that the 320i is slooow is not something that anyone wants to admit up front on the board. Apparently there's enough room for a small block chevy in the engine bay of the E21. As said, the front end would most likely need to be stiffened up, but I've seen pictures and know it can be done. Apparently, at the drags (which is all these cars can be used for, turning is not an issue with that much weight up front) they're supposed to pull 13 flats with a stock 4bbl V8. A slight improvement over stock.
