You are correct! I forgot about the 83 with the two piece case.

The 80-82 5 speeds were 3 piece cases but the 83 were only a 2 piece case. No intermediate section.


All U.S. E21 cars had an overdrive 5 speed (80-83). European E21 cars could be ordered with an optional close ratio 5 speed. These were most commonly found on the 323i . All the five speeds have a bell housing, intermediate section, and end section.

Are the gear ratios the same or is one a close ratio and the other the overdrive unit?
