Q about backend between taillights (archive)

I have a '77 320i and i want to know if i could fit a glossy plastic piece between the rear taillights, is this possible? i mean would a piece from a newer 320i fit?

if not, what would be a good solution to taking away the licence plate holes? i think its ugly so i want to mount it lower with lights down under the bumper.
