i think this is a problem we'll all have to face someday. I'm facing somewhat similar and I can share my experiences, if it's any help. Lance was correct in diagnosis, the cable attached to your directional knob has come loose, and you will need to get a whole new console to fix it. And if that wasn't enough, getting the sucker out proves to be a real bear. On my 83, the screws that hold this piece in have all broken the plastic, so it just kinda hangs there. The controls work, but not very well. As for the birdie, that's your heater motor jamming up...more good news. This, fortunately, is pretty repairable. You need to go under the hood and remove the black panel directly under the windshield, I think it's 8 screws or so. After pulling this away, you'll see the heater motor, it looks like a dumbell. use a little WD-40 on the shafts, spraying inward toward the motor. This should keep the bearings lubed enough to not cause you any more problems. Mine had to be replaced, it would squeal like a banshee and then get stuck, and even high power wasn't enough to free it. Luckily, I found a nice, quiet one at the boneyard. Oh yeah, I wouldn't pay full price for that piece of the dash. There's about 8 billion 320i's in pick and pull yards across the country, and most of these parts are still there, because of their trickiness to get out. When I attempt to remove one, I can post instructions of the easiest and hardest ways of getting them out. You could also try Bavarian Auto Recycling in Rancho Cordova, CA, I'm sure I can dig up a number for them, they'll probably have the part you need. Hope this helps!
