It is an 1980 - 320i. The "round knob" on the right side of the center console which controls the heater air flow directions has failed. No matter which way you trun it, the air comes out of the foot-well. Is there a mechanical repair or electrical repair? Where to start for repairing? Do I need any parts or special tools? If you have any experience, please post your suggestions or email me.

Unfortunately, you almost surely will have to buy a new plastic dash unit that contains the 3 knobs. The knob on the right attaches to a plastic nub. Once that nub fails, the knob spins around and around without changing the flapper valves. I doubt you will be able to extract a plastic dash unit from a 20-year-old car from a junk yard in good enough condition to make it ever work in your car. It's close to hopeless. It was a very poor design - lousy.
