One more thing before you throw in the towel. This is what I did and its a pain but works. Follow the cable for the directional flappers down to the passenger side, near the left foot side. You can attach a piece of bailing wire (or any stiff wire) to the flapper and control it by pushing and pulling it to the position that you want. It is not something to try while driving but you can put it on a mix of defrost and feet and leave it there or switch it to another setting before you leave the comfort of your garage. It ain't pretty but it's cheap.
