About the 323i, I read, I think in BIMMER magazine, that the 6cyl will fit, but needs new mounts to be welded in and corrosion protected. They suggest an E30 M3 engine, but to just make sure you have all the sensors for the Motronic 1.1 (TDC, and flywheel)
