1/ The clutch is not fully leaving the flywheel which can cause a slight knocking on changing and it would be harder to get into 1st gear when stationery. This can be caused by clutch fluid level being too low, worn seals in the slave or master cylinders or a badly worn clutch plate.
2/ It may be a simple shifter linkage problem, especially if you can get into 1st gear easily when stationary. If this is the case it should still knock when you shift with the engine off.
Hope that helps some.
I have an '83 320i. When I shift from one gear to another my stick clicks. It almost is a grinding sound. It makes moving the stick difficult but it does not effect performance in any way. I don't know what is wrong with it. I have tried starting the car in higher gears and the clutch does NOT slip. I first noticed the clicking/grinding shortly after I had a small fender-bender. I don't know if the problem is related.
