Recalling from a similar problem w/ my E28 535i, the diagnosis for my predicament turned out to be a worn pivot pin (top of ball where fork slider pivots onto has a plastic coating) as well as the worn socket of the fork slider. EVentually, the forkslider wore a hole so badly through the pin that there was no longer any travel on the clutch pedal.

I do hope that this is NOT your problem because the only remedy is to remove the transmission completely out of the car and replace worn components.

If there's a bright side, (if this happens to be your problem,) and you currently have a 4 speed, well... good time to upgrade to 5speed...
