I've had a 3.64 a 3.90 amd a 3.45 in my 323i and the 3.64 is the best compromise by far.
You can tell the ratio by the munbers stamped into it (divide one into the other)(usually on the macined flat at the rear of the diff.) the Presence of an "S" means limited slip. If its never been removed there may be a metal tag with the information on one of the rear cover bolts.
Limited slip also usually has a big "S" painted on the top if you take it out and clean it most of the time you can still see it.
I was always under the assumption that the higher the ratio the better, e.g. my E30 used to have 3.73 LSD, where as the M3 E30 has 4.1.
Why does the E21 323 have a lower ratio that the 316?
I currently have a full blown 1.8 turbo conversion running with twin 45 carbs. It's still running in after a complete rebuild with new turbo and bearings etc. I am hopefully buyin a 323 doner car on the weekend, and was going to do the brake conversion. I was also considering swapping the diff for some more performance and handling, but it sounds like I'd be better off sticking with the diff I have (unless the 323 one is an LSD?).

As long as it is an E-21 323i (I've seen E-30 titled as 82 as well) it should be a 3.45.
A 316 should be a 3.90 Some 315 were 4.11.
Does anyone know what the diff ratio is for an '82 323 diff from a Euro model? Does anyone also know what the diff ratio is for a 316 '82 Euro model?
Thanks.
