im not sure of the pro dates but basically there are 2 different heads and 2 diff. types of pistons
the pop up pistons were used in conjunction with cyl heads with a more hollowed out chamber thus the compression is gained from the block side
The other combo is flat top pistons with a more full combustion chamber on the cyl head side now the compression is gained from the cylinder head side the benefit of this is a cleaner burn because the injector is not spraying against the piston
you can try diff combos to see which you like just keep in mind that the motor mount brackets are not the same on all the blocks so look carefully
also FYI the block from a318i is the same but 20 lbs lighter less weight=more hp good luck
