The gear shifter in my bimmer has a real lot of play ( even when in gear ). This has never really worried me before.

But on the weekend a friend drove my car and had troubles picking the right gear, Granted the gears are close together but the play is what had him going into fifth instead of third.

Just out of interest I wondered what this was like when it was new, if this is how BMW intended it, or if the box has lost its notchness over the years ? Its Getraq 245 sport.
