the e21 digest FAQ's has a pretty decent procedure on how to do this. Haynes Manual can probably help you out too.

If you've got the funds, a short shifter really cleans things up.

on my 83 320is?

I have the same play in my shifter!

I have owned tow e21's and both have the same problem.
