Once you've got the linkage rod out, take it to your local machine shop and have them make and press in some new bushings (maybe brass or something??). If you go this route, you will also need to supply them your shifter as well as the shift rod coupling at the arse end of your tranny.
On the plus side, this shouldn't be too costly but on the minus side you would obviously have to experience some down time. Also, this can be a PIA if you have to do it lying on a creeper in your driveway.

P.S. I would recommend replaceing the little nylon type thrust washers and circlips in order to keep things nice and "tight".

Shift linkage bushings worn out.

on my 83 320is?

I have the same play in my shifter!

I have owned tow e21's and both have the same problem.
