Do the M20. The M42 is only 138hp and is a more involved swap. You can virtually bolt in an E30 325i motor using E21 323i parts. The six is smoother than the M42 and has 168hp stock. Tons of performance parts are available for the M20, while few are available for the M42. M20s are also more plentiful used than M42s. The best way to do this is to buy a complete 323i parts car and, if possible, a running 325i engine donor car so you can remove all of the Motronic stuff and transplant it into your 316. In the long run, it's probably cheaper to just buy a 323i or 325i, but if you want a project, go for it.
